Understanding Weight vs. Mass
In daily life, we use "weight" and "mass" as if they mean the same thing. However, in physics, they differ:
- Mass refers to how much matter is inside an object. It stays the same whether you are on Earth, Mars, or floating in space.
- Weight is the force of gravity pulling on that mass. An astronaut weighs less on the Moon than on Earth, even though their mass hasn't changed.
Practical Note: For almost all everyday purposes (cooking, shipping, body weight), we use mass units (kg, g) interchangeably with weight units (lbs) because gravity on Earth is roughly constant everywhere.
Metric System (SI)
The global standard for science and trade. Everything is based on multiples of 10.
- Milligram (mg): Medicine dosages, tiny amounts.
- Gram (g): Food ingredients, small packages.
- Kilogram (kg): The base unit. Body weight, groceries.
- Metric Ton (t): Heavy shipping, vehicles. Equals 1,000 kg.
Imperial & US System
Commonly used in the USA and UK. Based on historical standards.
- Ounce (oz): Spices, letters, small food items. (1/16th of a pound)
- Pound (lb): Body weight, produce, everyday objects.
- Stone (st): Used almost exclusively in the UK/Ireland for body weight (14 lbs).

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a "kilo"?
"Kilo" is short for Kilogram. One kilo is equal to roughly 2.2 pounds. So, if you weigh 70 kg, you weigh about 154 lbs (70 × 2.2).
What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?
A "tonne" (metric ton) is 1,000 kg (~2,204 lbs). A US "ton" (short ton) is exactly 2,000 lbs. They are close, but the metric tonne is slightly heavier.
