Common Gas Energy Values

Gas Type BTU per Cubic Foot Energy Density
Natural Gas 1,030 BTU/ft³ Low energy density
Propane 2,516 BTU/ft³ Medium energy density
Butane 3,200 BTU/ft³ High energy density

How It Works

BTU Output = Gas Flow Rate × BTU Value × Pressure Factor × Efficiency

Where:

  • Gas Flow Rate = Volume of gas per hour (CFH or m³/h)
  • BTU Value = Energy content per cubic foot of gas
  • Pressure Factor = Input Pressure ÷ Standard Pressure (14.7 PSI)
  • Efficiency = Percentage of energy actually converted to heat

Sample BTU Calculations

Gas Type Flow Rate Pressure Efficiency BTU Output Action
Natural Gas 100 CFH 14.7 PSI 90% 92,700 BTU/h
Propane 50 CFH 10 PSI 85% 107,170 BTU/h
Butane 2 m³/h 20 kPa 95% 121,920 BTU/h

Gas Pressure to BTU Calculator

Gas pressure alone doesn't tell you how much heat your system produces. What really matters is how pressure, gas type, and flow rate work together to generate BTU output. This calculator bridges that gap by converting your gas measurements into meaningful heating capacity.

Whether you're sizing a furnace, checking appliance capacity, or just curious about your gas system's power, this tool provides accurate BTU calculations that technicians and homeowners can rely on.

Gas Type Energy Comparisons

Different gases have dramatically different energy content. Here's how they compare per cubic foot:

Natural Gas
1,030 BTU/ft³
Most common household gas
Propane
2,516 BTU/ft³
2.4x more energy dense
Butane
3,200 BTU/ft³
3.1x more energy dense

The higher energy density of propane and butane means you need less volume to produce the same heat output. This calculator automatically accounts for these differences.
